How Long Does Local SEO Take to Work?

Short answer

Most local businesses see first-page movement on lower-competition terms within 60 to 90 days, and meaningful lead volume by month four to six. Competitive metro terms and high-ticket services typically take six to nine months. Anyone promising page one in 30 days is selling ads or worthless keywords.

Why it takes as long as it does

Local SEO is slow for three structural reasons, none of which an agency can shortcut.

Google has to crawl and index new pages before they can rank, which takes days to weeks on a new or low-authority site. Then it has to build confidence that the ranking is deserved, which it does by watching how searchers behave over time. And prominence signals are cumulative: reviews, citations and links only demonstrate consistency by accumulating, which by definition cannot be rushed.

Month by month, what should actually happen

Month 1: foundation. Technical crawl, site structure, Business Profile rebuild, citation cleanup, tracking installed. You will see almost no ranking movement and that is correct. If the agency is showing you ranking wins in month one, ask which keywords, because they are probably terms nobody searches.

Month 2: first signals. New service and city pages indexed. Long-tail terms start appearing in the top 20. Impressions in Search Console begin climbing before clicks do, which is the earliest honest indicator that something is working.

Month 3: first movement. Lower-competition terms reach page one. Map pack positions improve within your immediate radius. First attributable calls. This is the point at which the engagement stops being faith-based.

Months 4 to 6: compounding. Head terms climb. Map pack radius widens. Review velocity shows up in prominence. Lead volume becomes consistent enough to forecast from.

Months 6 to 12: consolidation. Competitive terms become winnable. The content published in months two and three matures. Cost per lead falls as organic carries more of the volume.

What makes it faster or slower

  • Domain history. A five-year-old site with clean history moves faster than a domain registered last month.
  • Competition. The single biggest variable. Passing three competitors with 400 reviews each takes longer than passing three with 40.
  • Starting point. A site with good bones needs fixes. A site built on a page builder with one page for nine services needs a rebuild, which adds a month before anything else can start.
  • Review velocity. The fastest lever most businesses have and the one most of them ignore.
  • Penalty history. Recovering from a bad agency's link building can add six months.

Warning signs at each stage

Month 2, no new pages published. Strategy without production is a stalled engagement.

Month 3, reporting only impressions. Impressions are an early indicator, not an outcome. By month three you should be seeing position changes on named terms.

Month 4, no tracked calls. Either call tracking was never installed or the traffic is not commercial. Both are serious.

Month 6, the report looks like month two. Ask directly what has been published and what has been earned. A good agency can answer in specifics.

The honest version

If you need leads next week, run Google Ads. That is what paid is for, and there is no shame in it. If you want a channel that still produces in year three without paying per click, start SEO now and be prepared to spend two quarters before it means anything.

Most contractors who succeed at this run both: paid funds the wait, organic lowers the blended cost per job over time.

Can local SEO work in 30 days?
Rarely, and not for terms worth having. You can see movement on very low-competition long-tail terms in 30 days, and fixing a badly misconfigured Business Profile can produce fast gains. But ranking for a competitive service-plus-city term in a month is not realistic.
How long before local SEO pays for itself?
For most service businesses with a job value above $2,000, month four to six is where tracked leads typically cover the retainer. Higher-ticket trades like roofing and remodeling often break even sooner because a single job covers several months.
Should I switch agencies if I see nothing after three months?
Ask what was published and what was earned before switching. Three months of foundation work with little ranking movement can be completely normal. Three months with no new pages, no citation cleanup and no review growth is not.
